What is a Word to PDF converter?
A Word to PDF converter turns a Word document, such as a DOC or DOCX file, into a PDF. A PDF keeps the text, the images, the tables and the page layout fixed, so the document looks the same on a phone, a laptop or a printer, whether or not the reader has Microsoft Word. It is the standard way to share a finished document.
With our converter you upload your file, click one button and download the PDF. There is nothing to install and no account to create. It is free and adds no watermark.
Features of this free Word to PDF converter
- DOC, DOCX, ODT and RTF: Convert Microsoft Word files, OpenDocument text files and rich text files.
- Layout stays in place: Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and images are kept in the PDF.
- Selectable text: The text in the PDF can be selected, searched and copied.
- No watermark and no signup: The PDF is clean, and you do not need an account.
- Files are deleted after conversion: Your file is converted and then removed from the conversion server.
- Works on any device: Use it on a phone, tablet or computer, in any modern browser.
Why convert Word to PDF?
- The layout never changes: A Word file can look different on another computer because of missing fonts or a different version. A PDF looks the same everywhere.
- Job applications and resumes: Employers often ask for a PDF so that your resume keeps its design.
- Assignments and reports: Schools and universities usually prefer PDF files for submissions.
- Protecting your text from accidental edits: A PDF is harder to change by accident than a Word file.
- Printing: A PDF prints with the same page breaks and margins on every printer.
- Official and legal documents: Contracts, letters and invoices are usually sent as PDF files.
How does the conversion work, and what happens to my file?
Converting a Word document correctly needs a full document engine, which cannot run inside a web browser. For this reason, unlike our image tools, this tool sends your file to our conversion server. The server uses the open-source LibreOffice engine to create the PDF, sends the PDF back to you and deletes your file. We do not keep a copy of your document.
The file travels over a secure connection. If a document is extremely confidential, convert it with the software on your own computer instead.
Tips for the best result
- Use common fonts: Fonts that are not installed on the conversion server are replaced, which can change line breaks and page counts. Standard fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman and Calibri are the safest.
- Save as DOCX: A modern DOCX file converts more reliably than an old DOC file.
- Check page breaks: If a table or heading must stay on one page, set that in Word before you convert.
- Accept or reject tracked changes: Finish your edits first, so that the PDF shows the final text.
- Keep images reasonable: Very large pictures make the PDF large. Compress them first with the Image Compressor.
- Check the PDF afterwards: Open the PDF and look at the first and last pages before you send it.
What may look different?
The PDF is made by a different engine than Microsoft Word, so very complex layouts can differ a little. Text boxes, advanced fonts, special effects, macros and some embedded objects may not look exactly as they do in Word, and comments are not shown as they are on screen. Simple documents such as letters, reports, resumes and essays convert very well.
Word vs PDF: when to use which
Use Word while you are writing and editing, because it is made for changes. Use PDF when the document is finished and you want to share, print or archive it. If you need to edit the text again later, keep the original Word file as well.
