What is a text summarizer?
A text summarizer is a free online tool that shortens a long text into its most important sentences. Paste an article, an essay, a report or your own notes, choose how short you want the summary to be, and the tool picks the key sentences for you in a second. It saves time when you need the main points of a text but do not have time to read every word.
Our summarizer runs in your browser, so the text you paste is never uploaded to a server. You can copy the summary, download it as a text file, or switch between a paragraph and a list of bullet points.
Features of this free article summarizer
- Three summary lengths: Short, medium and long summaries keep about 20, 35 or 50 percent of the sentences of your text.
- Paragraph or bullet points: Read the summary as flowing text, or as a list of key points that is easy to scan.
- Word and sentence counts: See how many words and sentences you started with, how many the summary keeps and how much shorter it is.
- Original order kept: The selected sentences stay in the same order as in your text, so the summary reads naturally.
- Instant results: The summary updates as soon as you paste text or change the length. There is no signup and no waiting.
- Private by design: Your text stays in your browser and is never sent to a server.
How does this summarizer work?
The tool splits your text into sentences and counts how often each meaningful word appears, ignoring common words such as the, and and of. Words that appear often are treated as signs of the main topic.
Each sentence receives a score based on how many of those important words it contains. Very short sentences are skipped, and the opening sentence gets a small boost, because articles often introduce their topic first.
The highest-scoring sentences are then selected and shown in their original order. Nothing is rewritten or invented, because every sentence in the summary comes from your own text.
The word scoring works best for English text. The tool also recognizes the Urdu full stop and question mark when it splits sentences, but results for other languages may be less accurate.
Extractive vs abstractive summaries
There are two kinds of summarizers. An extractive summarizer, like this one, selects the most important existing sentences from your text. An abstractive summarizer, usually powered by artificial intelligence, reads the text and writes new sentences in its own words.
Extractive summaries are fast, private and never add facts that are not in the original. Abstractive summaries can read more smoothly, but they need an AI service and can sometimes make mistakes or leave out important details.
Who uses a text summarizer?
- Students: To get the main points of a long reading before studying it in detail.
- Researchers: To quickly check whether an article is relevant before reading the whole paper.
- Professionals: To shorten reports, meeting notes and long emails.
- Writers and editors: To check whether the key message of a draft is clear.
- Bloggers and SEO writers: To draft a short intro, a social media post or a first version of a meta description from a long article.
- News readers: To skim long stories and decide which ones deserve a full read.
Tips for a better summary
- Paste clean text: Remove menus, ads and navigation text so that only the article itself is summarized.
- Use enough text: A summary works best on several paragraphs. Very short texts have little to choose from.
- Pick the right length: Choose Short for a quick overview and Long when you want to keep more detail.
- Try bullet points: A bullet list is often easier to scan than a paragraph.
- Edit the result: Treat the summary as a first draft and adjust it so that it flows the way you want.
- Check important facts: Always compare names, numbers and dates with the original text.
Limits of an automatic summarizer
An automatic summarizer does not understand the meaning of a text. It looks at word frequency and sentence position, so it can miss a key idea that is mentioned only once, and a selected sentence may refer to something earlier, such as he or this, that is no longer in the summary. Headings, lists and tables in your text are treated as ordinary sentences.
For legal, medical, financial or other important decisions, read the original text and do not rely on a summary alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this text summarizer free?
Yes. It is completely free, has no limits and needs no signup.
How do I summarize an article online?
Paste the article text into the box, choose a summary length, and the key sentences appear instantly. Then copy or download the summary.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. The summary is created in your browser and your text is never sent to a server.
Does this summarizer use AI?
No. It is an extractive summarizer that selects the most important sentences from your own text. It does not rewrite or add anything.
What is the difference between extractive and abstractive summaries?
An extractive summary reuses sentences from the original text. An abstractive summary, usually written by AI, rephrases the ideas in new words.
How long should my summary be?
Short keeps about 20 percent of the sentences, medium about 35 percent and long about 50 percent. Pick the one that fits your need.
Does it work with other languages?
It works best with English. It also recognizes the Urdu full stop and question mark, but results for other languages may be less accurate.
What is the minimum text length?
The text needs at least three sentences. Longer texts give better summaries.
Can I summarize a PDF?
Copy the text from the PDF and paste it into the box. The tool works with text, not with PDF files directly.
Can I use the summary as a meta description?
You can use it as a starting point, but a meta description should be about 70 to 160 characters, so shorten it and check the length with the Meta Tag Generator.
