What is a Twitter Card?
A Twitter Card is the rich preview that appears when someone shares a link on X, the platform that used to be called Twitter. Instead of a plain web address, people see a card with a title, a short description and an image. A good card gets noticed in a busy feed and makes more people click.
The card is built from a few meta tags in the head of your page. The tags still begin with twitter: even though the platform has a new name. Our generator writes these tags for you and shows a live preview, so you can see the result before you publish.
Twitter Card types
X supports several card types. This tool creates the two that almost every website needs:
- Summary card: A small square image on the left with the title and description next to it. It works well for text-focused pages such as articles and documentation.
- Summary card with large image: A wide image above the title and description. It takes more space in the feed, so it is the best choice for blog posts, products and anything with a strong picture.
The Twitter Card tags explained
- twitter:card: The card type, either summary or summary_large_image. This is the only tag that is required.
- twitter:site: The @username of your website or brand account.
- twitter:creator: The @username of the person who wrote the content.
- twitter:title: The headline of the card. It is cut off after about 70 characters.
- twitter:description: A short summary, cut off after about 200 characters. Do not repeat the title.
- twitter:image: The full web address of the image, starting with https.
- twitter:image:alt: A description of the image for people who cannot see it. It can be up to 420 characters.
Image size and format rules
- Summary card: A square image with a 1:1 ratio, at least 144 x 144 pixels.
- Large image card: A wide image with a 2:1 ratio, at least 300 x 157 pixels. A size of 1200 x 600 pixels looks sharp on every screen.
- Maximum size: Up to 4096 x 4096 pixels and under 5 MB.
- Formats: JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF. SVG images are not supported.
- Address: Use a full link that starts with https, and make sure the image is public, so X can fetch it.
How to add Twitter Card tags to your website
- Plain HTML: Paste the generated tags inside the head section of each page.
- WordPress: SEO plugins have social settings where you add a title, description and image for each page.
- Next.js: Set the twitter field in your page metadata, with the card type, title, description and images.
- Shopify, Wix and Squarespace: Use the social sharing or SEO settings in the page editor.
Twitter Cards and Open Graph tags
X can read Open Graph tags, the ones used by Facebook and LinkedIn, when Twitter Card tags are missing. If your page has og:title, og:description and og:image, X uses them as a fallback. You still need the twitter:card tag, because it tells X which card layout to use.
The safest setup is to add both sets of tags. Use our Open Graph Generator for the og tags and this tool for the Twitter tags, and your links will look good on every platform.
How to test your card
Publish the page, then paste its link into a new post on X, without sending it. The card preview appears in the composer. The old Card Validator page is no longer reliable, so a draft post is the simplest check.
X keeps a copy of cards for a while. If you change the tags and still see the old card, wait a little or add a harmless extra part to the link, such as a question mark followed by v2, to force a fresh look.
Tips for cards that get clicks
- Write for people: A clear benefit in the title beats a long list of keywords.
- Use a bold image: Large text and strong contrast stay readable even in a small preview.
- Keep key content central: Different apps crop the edges of the image.
- Do not repeat the title: Use the description to add something new.
- Add alt text: It helps accessibility and describes the image when it cannot load.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Twitter Card?
A Twitter Card is the rich link preview on X with a title, description and image. It is created with meta tags in the head of your page.
Do I need Twitter Card tags if I already have Open Graph tags?
X falls back to Open Graph tags for the title, description and image, but you still need the twitter:card tag to choose the layout. Using both gives the best result.
What size should a Twitter Card image be?
For a large image card use a 2:1 image of at least 300 x 157 pixels, such as 1200 x 600. For a summary card use a square image of at least 144 x 144 pixels. Keep it under 5 MB.
Do Twitter Cards still work now that Twitter is called X?
Yes. The platform changed its name, but the tags still start with twitter: and cards still show in the feed.
Is my information saved by the generator?
No. The tags are created in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
