What is a background remover?

A background remover cuts the background out of an image so that only the main subject remains. The result is a picture with a transparent background, which you can place on a website, a product page, a design or a presentation. It is one of the most common editing jobs for product photos, logos, signatures and profile pictures.

How does this background remover work?

The tool compares the color of every pixel with the background color you picked. Pixels that are close enough, within the tolerance you set, become transparent. In connected mode, the tool starts at the edges of the image and spreads inward, so only the background around your subject is removed and similar colors inside the subject stay.

The edge softness setting makes pixels at the border between the background and the subject partly transparent, which gives a smoother edge. This is a color-based method, so it works best when the background is one solid color. It does not use artificial intelligence.

Which images work best?

• Product photos on a white or plain background: A classic case where this tool works well.
• Logos and graphics on a solid color: Remove the flat color behind a logo and keep only the artwork.
• Signatures and scanned stamps: Remove the white paper and keep the ink.
• Studio portraits and green screen: Even, single-color backgrounds can be removed cleanly.
• Busy or detailed backgrounds: A street, a room or a landscape cannot be removed by color alone. An AI background remover is the right tool for these.
• Backgrounds with shadows or gradients: Soft shadows and gradients contain many colors, so expect to adjust the tolerance and accept a rougher edge.

How to get clean edges

• Click near the subject: Pick the background color close to the edge of your subject, not far away in a corner.
• Raise the tolerance slowly: Increase it until the background disappears, and stop before parts of the subject start to vanish.
• Keep connected mode on: It protects colors inside your subject that look like the background.
• Use a little edge softness: A value between 10 and 30 percent usually looks natural.
• Turn off connected mode for holes: If the subject has a hole you want to clear, such as the inside of a handle, switch it off so that the matching color is removed everywhere.
• Start with a good image: Sharp photos with even lighting give cleaner edges.

What is a transparent PNG?

A transparent PNG keeps the see-through areas of your image, so you can place it on any color or picture. JPG cannot hold transparency, which is why the result is saved as PNG. If you need a solid background instead, choose a color in the tool and download the result with the color filled in.

Limits of this tool

This tool works with color, not with an understanding of the picture, so it cannot separate a subject from a complex background, from hair or fur, or from the shadow under an object. Large images are scaled down to 3,000 pixels on the longest side to keep your browser fast. For difficult photos, use an AI background remover.
