What is a PNG to JPG converter?

A PNG to JPG converter changes PNG images into JPG files, also written JPEG. PNG files are sharp and can be transparent, but they are often large. JPG files are usually much smaller, which makes them quicker to upload, email, share and load on a website. If a form, a store or an app asks for a JPG, this is the tool you need.

Our converter runs in your browser, so your pictures are never uploaded to a server. You can convert up to 30 images at once, choose the JPG quality and pick the background color that fills transparent areas. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no signup.

Features of this free PNG to JPG converter

  • Batch conversion: Add up to 30 PNG images and convert them all at once.
  • Adjustable JPG quality: Move the slider to balance the sharpness against the file size.
  • Background color for transparency: Fill transparent parts of a PNG with white or any color you choose.
  • Before and after sizes: See how much smaller or larger each file became.
  • Single download or ZIP: Save one file, or all converted images together in a ZIP.
  • Private and free: No signup, no watermark and no upload.

PNG vs JPG: the main differences

  • Compression: PNG is lossless, which means no detail is lost. JPG is lossy, so it removes small details that the eye rarely notices to make the file smaller.
  • Transparency: PNG can have transparent areas. JPG cannot, so transparent parts must be filled with a color.
  • File size: A photo saved as JPG is often several times smaller than the same photo saved as PNG.
  • Best for: PNG suits logos, icons, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or text. JPG suits photographs.
  • Editing: Every time a JPG is saved again, a little quality is lost. PNG can be saved again without any loss.

Why convert PNG to JPG?

  • Smaller files: Save storage space and send pictures faster by email or chat.
  • Faster websites: Smaller photos load faster, which helps visitors and can improve your page speed.
  • Upload requirements: Many online forms, job portals and stores accept only JPG files.
  • Compatibility: JPG opens on almost every device, program and printer.
  • Social media: Large PNG photos are often recompressed by social networks. Starting with a good JPG gives you more control.
  • Documents and presentations: Keep a slide deck or a report light by using JPG photos instead of heavy PNG files.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG cannot store transparency. When you convert a PNG with transparent areas, those areas must become a solid color. This converter fills them with white by default, because white suits most documents and web pages. If your image will appear on a colored background, pick that color instead with the background color picker, so the edges match.

How to choose the JPG quality

  • 90 to 95 percent: Very high quality. Use it when you want the image to look almost identical to the PNG.
  • 80 to 90 percent: A good balance for most photos. The file becomes much smaller and the difference is hard to see.
  • 60 to 80 percent: Smaller files for thumbnails and previews, with some visible softness.
  • Below 60 percent: Not recommended. Blocky patterns and blur become easy to notice.

Tips for better results

  • Keep PNG for graphics with text: Screenshots, logos and diagrams can look blurry around the letters as JPG. Convert photographs, not sharp graphics.
  • Keep your originals: Converting to JPG loses some detail. Keep the PNG files in case you need them again.
  • Match the background color: Choose the color of the page where the image will be used.
  • Resize first if needed: For websites, a smaller image makes an even smaller file. Use the Image Resizer before you convert.
  • Compress further when needed: If a JPG is still too large, run it through the Image Compressor.

Limits of PNG to JPG conversion

You can add up to 30 images at a time, each up to 25 MB. Converting a JPG back to PNG does not restore the detail that was removed, and it does not bring back transparency. Because JPG is lossy, it is not the right format for images that you will edit again and again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this PNG to JPG converter free?

Yes. It is completely free, adds no watermark and needs no signup.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

What happens to transparent areas in my PNG?

JPG cannot be transparent, so those areas are filled with the background color you choose. The default is white.

Will the quality get worse?

A little detail is removed because JPG is lossy. At 90 percent or more, the difference is hard to see for photographs.

Why is my JPG larger than my PNG?

This can happen with small, simple graphics that PNG compresses very well. Lower the quality, or keep the PNG.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 30 images at a time, up to 25 MB each.

Can I convert JPG back to PNG?

You can change the format, but detail that was removed when you made the JPG cannot be brought back.

Which is better, PNG or JPG?

Use PNG for logos, screenshots and graphics. Use JPG for photographs, where a smaller file matters.

How do I make a JPG even smaller?

Lower the quality a little, resize the image with the Image Resizer, or use the Image Compressor.
