Text Case Guide: Uppercase, Lowercase, Title Case, camelCase and More
By SEOAnalytics Lab · Updated · 6 min read
Typing a whole paragraph with caps lock on, pasting a headline in the wrong style or renaming a list of variables by hand are small problems that waste a lot of time. A case converter fixes them in one click. It changes the capital letters of your text without retyping a single word.
This guide explains the most common text cases, the rules for title case and sentence case, the developer cases such as camelCase and snake_case, and how to change case in Word and Google Docs. You can convert any text with our free case converter.
What is text case?
Text case describes which letters in a piece of text are capitals and which are small. Different situations call for different styles. A headline, a sentence, a file name and a variable in a program each follow their own convention.
Using the right case makes your writing look professional, helps readers scan headings and keeps code consistent and easy to read.
Common text cases explained
- UPPERCASE. Every letter is a capital. It suits short labels, warnings and abbreviations, but long passages in capitals are hard to read and feel like shouting.
- lowercase. Every letter is small. It is common for email addresses, usernames, URLs and hashtags.
- Sentence case. Only the first word of each sentence and proper names start with a capital, like normal writing. Many modern websites use it for headings.
- Title Case. The main words in a heading start with a capital. It is the classic style for book titles, articles and headlines.
- Capitalized Case. Every word starts with a capital, including small words such as and, of and the.
- aLtErNaTiNg case. Letters switch between small and capital. It is mostly used for jokes and social media.
- iNVERSE case. Every capital becomes small and every small letter becomes a capital. It is useful for fixing text typed with caps lock on by mistake.
Title case rules
Title case looks simple, but style guides do not fully agree. The core rule is the same everywhere: capitalize the first and last word, and capitalize nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.
Small words such as a, an, the, and, but, or, for, of, in, on, to and by usually stay in lowercase, unless they are the first or last word. The difference is in prepositions. The AP style capitalizes words of four letters or more, while the Chicago style keeps all prepositions in lowercase, whatever their length. Pick one style and use it on every page of your website.
Developer cases: camelCase, snake_case and more
Programmers cannot use spaces in names, so they join words in a few standard ways. Each programming language and framework has a favorite.
- camelCase. The first word is lowercase and every next word starts with a capital, such as userFirstName. It is the usual style for variables and functions in JavaScript and Java.
- PascalCase. Every word starts with a capital, such as UserProfile. It is common for classes and React components.
- snake_case. Words are lowercase and joined with underscores, such as user_first_name. It is popular in Python and for database columns.
- kebab-case. Words are lowercase and joined with hyphens, such as user-first-name. It is the standard for URLs and CSS class names.
- CONSTANT_CASE. Words are capitals joined with underscores, such as MAX_FILE_SIZE. It is used for constants and environment variables.

How to change case in Word and Google Docs
- Microsoft Word. Select the text and press Shift+F3 to cycle between sentence case, lowercase and uppercase, or use the Change Case button on the Home tab.
- Google Docs. Select the text, open the Format menu, choose Text, then Capitalization, and pick lowercase, UPPERCASE or Title Case.
- Anywhere else. Email, forms, spreadsheets and code editors often have no case tool, so an online case converter is the quickest option.
Why text case matters for SEO
Case affects search in a few practical ways. The path part of a URL can be case-sensitive on many servers, so Page-One and page-one may be treated as different addresses and create duplicate pages. Use lowercase URLs with hyphens between words, which is the format Google recommends.
Headings and titles should follow one consistent style, either sentence case or title case, so your site looks tidy and trustworthy. Avoid writing titles and descriptions in all capitals, because it hurts readability and rarely earns more clicks.
Common case mistakes to avoid
- Retyping by hand. It is slow and creates typos. Convert the text instead.
- Mixing styles. Switching between title case and sentence case in headings looks careless.
- Writing long text in capitals. Readers find it harder to read and may feel shouted at.
- Forgetting proper names. A converter to lowercase will also remove capitals from names, so check them afterwards.
- Mixing code styles. Using camelCase and snake_case in the same project makes code harder to read.
