What is schema markup?

Schema markup is a piece of code that describes the content of a page in a way search engines can read without guessing. It tells them that a page is an article written by a certain author, a product with a certain price, a business with a certain address or a list of questions and answers.

The vocabulary comes from Schema.org, a shared project of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Yandex. When a search engine understands your page better, it can show extra details in the results, such as the price of a product, your business information or a breadcrumb path. These extras are called rich results.

What is JSON-LD?

JSON-LD stands for JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data. It is a way to write schema markup as a small block of text inside a script tag. Google recommends it over the older microdata and RDFa formats, because it sits in one place and does not mix with your page design.

That makes it easier to add, edit and remove. You do not need to touch the visible content of your page. Our generator writes the whole block for you, including the script tag.

Schema types you can create

  • FAQ: A list of questions and answers that appear on your page.
  • Article: A blog post, news story or article, with its headline, image, author and dates.
  • Local business: The name, address, phone number and opening hours of a shop, restaurant or service.
  • Product: A product with its name, image, brand, price and availability.
  • Organization: Your company or brand, with its logo, website, contact details and social profiles.
  • Breadcrumbs: The path from your home page to the current page, such as Home, Tools, Word Counter.

Does schema markup help SEO?

Schema markup is not a direct ranking factor, so adding it will not push a page up the results by itself. What it does is help search engines understand your content, and it makes your page eligible for rich results that stand out and can raise your click rate.

There is no promise that Google will show a rich result, even when the markup is perfect. Google decides case by case, based on the quality of the page and the search. Think of schema as a clear label on your content, not a guarantee.

A note about FAQ markup

In 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For most other sites, FAQ markup no longer produces the expandable questions under a search result. It is still valid structured data, and it can help machines understand the page, but you should not expect the dropdowns that were common a few years ago.

How to add JSON-LD to your website

  • Plain HTML: Paste the script block into the head section of the page, or anywhere in the body.
  • WordPress: Use an SEO plugin that supports custom schema, or add the code with a header and footer plugin.
  • Next.js and React: Render a script tag of type application/ld+json in your page component.
  • Google Tag Manager: Add a custom HTML tag that fires on the pages you choose.
  • Shopify and Wix: Add the code to the theme or the page settings, or use an app.

Rules you must follow

  • Match the visible page: Only mark up information that visitors can really see on the page.
  • Be honest: Never invent reviews, ratings, prices or business details. Misleading markup can lead to a manual action from Google.
  • Keep it accurate: Update the markup when a price, date or address changes.
  • Use the right type: Do not mark a product page as an article, or a general page as a local business.
  • Add every required field: Missing fields can make the markup ineligible for rich results.

How to test your schema markup

After you add the code, test the live page with Google's Rich Results Test. It shows which rich results the page can get and lists any errors or warnings. The Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org checks the syntax against the full Schema.org vocabulary.

Once the page has been crawled, the enhancement reports in Google Search Console show how many pages have valid markup and flag problems across your whole site.

Common schema markup mistakes

  • Markup for content that is not on the page: Hidden or invented content breaks Google's rules.
  • Relative links: Use full web addresses that start with https.
  • Wrong date format: Dates should look like 2026-10-09.
  • Missing price or currency: A product without a price cannot show price details.
  • Duplicate or conflicting markup: A plugin and a hand-made block can describe the same thing twice, with different details.

Why use our free schema markup generator?

  • Six common types: FAQ, article, local business, product, organization and breadcrumbs.
  • Built-in checks: Warnings for missing fields, wrong links and a bad price or currency.
  • Safe code: Empty fields are removed and special characters are escaped for you.
  • Copy as you need: Copy the full script tag, or only the JSON.
  • Private and free: Nothing is uploaded, and there is no signup or limit.
